Quality audit requires quality data. The input of this data takes time, a scarce entity in the operating theatre environment. Much of the data required for audit is already entered into other hospital systems, and can be ‘salvaged’ through the generation of links with existing infrastructure.

Patient Information

SURGbase Enterprise has the capacity to link with HL7 compliant hospital information systems, and to use this data to pre-populate some of the dataset.

Examples of this include:

• Demographics (first name, surname, date of birth, sex, medicare number) (development complete)
• Admission information (admission date, primary admitting consultant, unit, etc) (in development)
• Theatre information (ASA grading, operation date, etc.) (in development)

The degree to which SURGbase can be integrated with existing systems is dependent on the openness of these parallel programs to read-only access, or the provision of HL7 messaging by desired hospital databases.
